That place in Paris

Had the day off, and went to a café in my neighborhood to finally finish On Beauty. A bunch of new cafés have sprung up around here, but I'm still missing a bookstore. I had some very idle thoughts of opening one myself. And then I was thinking about the British guy who runs the small English-language bookstore on the Rue Princesse in Paris--how, if I did own a bookstore, I'd be very like him. Whenever I go in there (which, alas, I used to do all the time, but probably won't so often in the future), he's always very nosy about what I'm buying and will tell some related story about his cousin's son's friend's trip to Turkey seven years ago, or what have you. I love that guy.

Shakespeare and Co. is closed, or was when I visited in July. I don't think that's the english language bookstore you were talking about, but nonetheless, upsetting. Even though it wasn't the original Shakespeare and Co. anyway.

I want to take the day off and sit at a cafe all day. When I do that on a Saturday, it feels transgressive.

This was the place I had in mind. It happened to be around the corner from the St Sulpice apartment. I got quite attached to it while visiting, and suspect if I actually lived there it would become a second home.

I didn't realize S & Co. was closed. I guess I last went there last year some time.

By the way, sorry about the word verification thing. Have been getting spammed a lot lately and this seems to be the simplest Blogger solution for choking it off.

I'll have to go next time I'm there. Is it named after the periodical? Paris is lovely, of course. I live in the one neighborhood in Chicago with a decent amount of cafes, but I don't linger around at them as much as I'd like.

Was going to say something clever about the word verification, but my wits escaped me. The spammers did offer a little variety in the comments, at least.
