Thinking about Tony

Looked through Tab Hunter Confidential for the bits about his affair with Tony Perkins. Tony was apparently the It Boy of gay life in the 1950s. He crops up in loads of memoirs of the period.

Update: When Tab met Tony:
As I toweled off, someone approached and formally introduced me to a new actor in town, Anthony Perkins.

Tony was tall and skinny, wearing a button-down Brooks Brothers shirt and aviator-style glasses. He looked like a gawky New England prep school student who'd taken a wrong turn....

He was living at the Chateau [Marmont] while he made Friendly Persuasion...in which he played the son in a family of Quakers. Good casting: Tony had a naturally withdrawn quality, totally different from most performers, who were always on. By contrast, Tony was visibly uncomfortable and terribly shy. [...] I found his reticence appealing. Despite my door-opening looks, I usually felt insecure and awkward myself.
